FUNCTIONAL SURFACE SOLUTIONS

Functional Topcoats

An anti-fingerprint topcoat is selected as part of the finished surface, alongside the substrate, base finish and later processing. Samples help define appearance, handling and cleaning requirements. Removable transport protection is specified separately.

SUBSTRATE + TOPCOAT

Requirements for the Finished Surface

The finished component, its handling and cleaning conditions, and its fabrication route help define the topcoat sample and inspection requirements.

Substrate and Base Finish

State the steel grade, product form, dimensions and base appearance. Identify any PVD layer and the faces requiring the topcoat.

Appearance and Use

Provide the colour and gloss sample, visible areas, handling and cleaning conditions. Describe the finger-mark appearance and other surface requirements to assess.

Sample and Inspection

Include subsequent forming, stamping or bending, the inspection stage and acceptance criteria. A reference sample defines the combined finish before ordering.

Anti-Fingerprint Topcoat

A transparent topcoat, with standard AF and nano AF options, applied over Hairline, No.4, mirror, etched, blasted or PVD surfaces. Agree any colour or gloss change using a sample.

Sheet substrate

Reference grades
201, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 430
Metal substrate thickness
0.3–3.0 mm
Specification details
Sheet size is confirmed with the substrate and topcoat requirements.
Uses and Order Requirements

Order Requirements

Specify the substrate, base finish, any existing PVD layer, final appearance, visible faces, downstream processing, cleaning environment, inspection and protection requirements.

PVD + Anti-Fingerprint Topcoat for Strip

An additional film-removal, topcoat-application and curing route after PVD colour coating, followed by protective film and packaging. Specify the colour layer, topcoat and removable protection film separately.

PVD-coated strip with topcoat

Reference grades
SUS430M, SUS436M
Specification details
Substrate thickness, width, coil requirements and total layer requirements are confirmed with the order and sample.
  • This strip reference describes the PVD-plus-topcoat route.
Uses and Order Requirements

Order Requirements

Specify the substrate, base surface, colour sample, final gloss, subsequent roll forming, stamping or bending, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Transport and Processing Protective Film

A removable film selected for transport, laser cutting, bending or stamping. It is separate from a permanent decorative laminate, the PVD colour layer and an anti-fingerprint topcoat.

Removable film

Removable film reference
Film thickness references: 60, 70, 75, 80, 100 and 105 μm (0.060, 0.070, 0.075, 0.080, 0.100 and 0.105 mm). Select the film type to suit the processing and removal requirements.
  • The listed thicknesses refer to removable protection film, not to the metal substrate or PVD layer.
Uses and Order Requirements

Order Requirements

Specify the protected surface, laser type, downstream forming, film thickness, adhesion and removal requirements, residue acceptance and packaging.

PROCESS FLOW

Anti-Fingerprint Topcoat Processing

When a PVD-coated coil requires a composite anti-fingerprint topcoat, these operations follow PVD coating.

  1. Protective-film removal

  2. Topcoat application and curing

  3. Final protective-film application

  4. Inspection and packaging

PVD-Coated Coil with Anti-Fingerprint Topcoat

Roll forming, stamping and bending are downstream operations. Include the intended part and forming requirements when discussing the coating and sample.

Include the substrate and base finish, topcoat requirement, treated faces, final appearance sample, cleaning conditions, downstream processing and inspection requirements. Add removable protective-film requirements separately.
